Crossing the Threshold

Hello Ladies,

Happy first day of Autumn.

Like our ancestral grandmothers, we gather to honor and celebrate the changing seasons—to learn from the ancient ways of different cultures and to express the Divine Feminine rhythms we hold within our bodies.

On Sunday, we gathered in the Greenhouse to celebrate the coming Autumn Equinox and to honor Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

This gathering was a collaboration. Cheryl Hankin, a Jewish wise woman, baked fresh challah and blessed it in Hebrew. I couldn’t understand the words, but I loved the timbre of her voice. There was something enlightening, intriguing, and beautiful about listening to an ancient language carried through her voice into our circle. She later shared this loose translation: “Blessed are You, Goddess and Creator of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.”

Hearing those words afterward made the moment even more beautiful—the blessing of bread, earth, creation, and the turning of the season all meeting in our circle.

We began by slowly letting go of summer, creating sound and rhythm using only our bodies. Then we picked up the drums, and little by little, our individual rhythms became synchronized. Metaphorically, we stepped across the threshold into autumn.

We expressed this sacred crossing through writing, color, and shape. Flowing from paper to drum, our rhythm became poetry.

And then we could no longer sit still. The energy rose from the drums and moved through our bodies until it burst into divine dance—barefoot on the grass.
